    I tried to reuse a cotter pin, it broke on the THIRD time while removing it ~ I think there are more variables involved to simply conclude that the 487 times in your test has any relevance to real world applications... I would HIGHLY suggest using a new one EVERY TIME unless it's on a one time use project/disposable item.

      The stanchion tubes were polished to minimize the risk and for the sake of inspectability. Also, the lifeline moves forward and aft a good bit depending on setup and usage. Covering it is fine, but having a fair lead that won’t chafe in h to r first place is better.

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor 5 дней назад

      People should really read the instructions from spar manufacturers. Selden specifically says 10° per leg, not to bend it all the way around. The pins I find with one leg always have the other leg bent all the way around. One can assume the missing leg was also over bent. Take a work hardened metal and beat it with a halyard forever and the little leg will break off. The missing pins are harder to say how they were, but they tend to be on boats where all the pins are bent all the way around. You do you on your own boat and ignore the correct way of doing things. This was just a fun little demonstration to showcase the right way to bend a cotter pin on a sailboat (not for aviation usage, they bend the whole way around but also don’t have halyards to worry about).

    • @patrickfitzoot
      @patrickfitzoot 5 дней назад

      @@RiggingDoctor the point, covered elsewhere in the comments, is that once bent into position, they don't cycle, work harden any more than the first set. So the cycles of use to failure demonstration has nothing to do with the application.

    Thanks you two. As always … informative and no b.s. chatter blah,blah… Nature’s Compost seems pricey. • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor 3 дня назад

      You are correct! I made sure the end of the backing plate was well tapered onto the hull, but I ignored the corners. If it were a thinner build, I would go back and round the corners. Being how it is very overbuilt, I am just going to keep an eye on it. On Windpuff, I will be sure to round the backing plates. Thank you!

    Shouldn’t you have drilled oversize holes so that you could fill them with epoxy, then re-drills the size hole you want so that the perimeter of the hole is all epoxy and won’t rot out the area of the hole you drilled?

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor 8 дней назад

      The issue with pilot holes is making it line up perfectly with the bolt hole. If I’m off by a tiny bit, the full size hole will be off center. Is there a trick to center the pilot hole perfectly?

    • @bakters
      @bakters 8 дней назад

      @@RiggingDoctor In this case I'd start with the full size bit, make a small recess, then switch to a small bit. It should not wonder off anymore. (You can always use a center punch in addition to that, in case you are paranoid about uneven lines... ;-)) Also, you wanted perfectly parallel chainplates. Cut two spacers of the exact same size and clamp one chainplate to the other through them. The spacers could be glued to the boat. The best trick for that is the superglue "double" sided tape trick. You take a regular one-sided tape, put the tape on one surface, the other strip of tape on the other surface, then you glue both tapes back-to-back with superglue. It holds better than a double-sided tape and it's very easy to remove. It's a really good trick.

Personally I prefer using spacers to keep 2 surfaces parallel. Whenever I just use measurements I somehow screw up one hole. Oh my tip with cordless tools on the boat is they are cheap. Then if they fall in or are stolen you don't feel as bad.
